Insomnia – The Problem With Your Sleep

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which prevents one from sleeping for a reasonable period. It can even prevent a person from being able to fall asleep overall. An individual who suffers from insomnia will complain of an inability to close their eyes or “rest their mind” for more than a few minutes at a time. Insomnia can be caused by diet, stress, alcohol, drugs, or even feelings such as fear or dread. Sometimes, people suffer from insomnia because they have an overactive mind or because of other physical reasons, such as excruciating pains. To cure this sleeping disorder, it is important to understand exactly what is causing it.

People’s lifestyles these days are fast-paced. Many people are living in the rat race, and busyness rules their lives. Because of this, more and more people are having difficulties falling asleep or having sleeping deprivation. Lack of sleep can affect a person’s stability and productivity. Usually, an adult person needs seven to eight hours of sleep per night for them to be mentally alert during the day. Consulting a physician is very important when signs of sleep disorder, such as insomnia, occur.

Causes of Insomnia

The first thing you should do if you find yourself lying in bed, unable to fall asleep is to determine whether there was something you were doing throughout the day that might cause sleeplessness. For example, if you drank coffee up until nine o’clock at night, you may need to look no further as to what is causing your sleeping disorder. Consumption of caffeine, especially at night, can cause this sleep disorder. Certain foods can also keep you awake at night. If you are not sure about your diet that may be causing your sleep disorder, do your research or talk to a dietitian. Having that last cup of coffee could cost you hours of rest that you deserve.

If you are on medication, find out from your doctor whether the drug you are taking is causing your insomnia. Alcohol can also cause this sleeping disorder. It all comes down to monitoring what is going into your body. Very often, it is what you are consuming that may be causing your insomnia.

If you have some challenging deadline and you are under stress or you are dealing with some guilt or you are afraid of something, these, too, can cause insomnia. However, if you are stress-free and you can’t sleep, try some experiments. Try eating different foods or eliminate certain things from your daily diet. If you suddenly start sleeping like a baby, then you have found your culprit. The key is to pay attention to your body. Your body needs sleep to recharge and you need sleep so you don’t become a bear to your co-workers the next morning. Do yourself a favour and find out what is causing your insomnia.

How Insomnia Affects Children

Children need more sleep than their parents although they sometimes want to stay awake if their parents stay awake. A child in school needs between nine to twelve hours of sleep each night. They need at least nine hours of sleep to be able to participate actively in school activities. Many children do not get this amount of sleep, and many of these do not do as well in school because of this. Children who had enough sleep will wake up easily the next morning. Parents who have trouble getting their children to wake up early and easily should know that their children need more sleep.

Children should also be able to fall asleep easily. If they toss and turn for more than thirty minutes before they fall asleep, there is a problem. Children should be able to stay awake throughout the day if they are getting enough sleep at night. There is information that a substantial number of children are not alert at school and that their drowsiness interferes with their education to some extent.

Treatment for Insomnia

Many insomniacs rely on sleeping pills and other sedatives before they can sleep. Others use herbs of different types to get over the problem. Some traditional remedies for insomnia have included drinking warm milk before bedtime, taking a warm bath in the evening; exercising vigorously for about half an hour in the afternoon, eating a large lunch and a light dinner at least three hours before bed, avoiding mentally stimulating activities in the evening hours, getting up early in the morning and retiring to bed at a reasonable time in the evening.
